Why 6 Months Feels Like a Big Deal (Hint: Food Is Coming!)

Jul 27, 2025

If you’re a parent with a little one under 6 months, you probably hear this all the time: “Wait until 6 months!”

But why is that age such a big milestone? For many of us, it’s because this is the stage when milk is no longer the only star of the show. It’s the start of a whole new chapter – your baby’s journey with food!

By around 6 months, babies are usually ready to:

  • Sit up with support

  • Show interest in what we’re eating

  • Develop enough coordination to try new textures safely

This is when parents begin introducing solids – whether through purees, Baby-Led Weaning (BLW), or a mix of both.

For me, this milestone feels extra special because:

  • It’s a sign that baby is growing up so fast

  • I get to see their reaction to new tastes and textures

  • We get to involve them in mealtime as a family

Of course, there’s also a little anxiety! Choking hazards, mess everywhere, “are they eating enough?” – these thoughts run through every parent’s mind. But that’s part of the adventure.

As we count down to 6 months, here are a few things I’m focusing on:

  1. Learning – Reading about BLW vs purees and safe first foods

  2. Gearing Up – High chair, soft spoons, bibs that can handle a storm

  3. Planning – Simple, wholesome first foods (think steamed carrots, avocado, banana)

What excites me most is knowing that food will become more than just nutrition. It’s going to be about discovery, family moments, and fun.

If you’re also waiting for that 6-month mark, know that it’s completely normal to feel both thrilled and a little nervous. When the time comes, take it slow, enjoy the giggles, and don’t worry about the mess. After all, this is the beginning of a beautiful (and tasty) journey!

Are you counting down to 6 months too?
What are you most excited (or nervous!) about when it comes to starting solids? Share with me – I’d love to hear from other parents in the same season. 💛

Till next week, parents!
