Oops! The 5 Feeding Mistakes We All Make — And How to Avoid Them

Oct 12, 2025

Let’s be real — feeding your Little Boss isn’t always picture-perfect. Some days, the porridge ends up on the floor (or in your hair), and other days, they’ll only eat three spoonfuls before shaking their head. The truth is, even the most loving parents can make a few common feeding mistakes — without even realizing it!

Don’t worry — this isn’t about guilt. It’s about learning together and making mealtimes a little smoother (and happier!) for you and your little one.

We get it — between naps, work, and house chores, feeding can feel like something you need to get done fast. But rushing your baby can actually make them more resistant to eating.

Babies need time to explore — to look, touch, smell, and taste at their own pace. When they’re hurried, they can feel pressured and lose interest.

💡 Tip: Give your baby at least 20–30 minutes for meals. Sit down together, make eye contact, and let them enjoy discovering the food. Mealtime should feel calm and connected, not rushed.

Turning on cartoons or handing them toys might make things easier for the moment, but it can disconnect your baby from their hunger cues. They may eat more (or less) than they actually need.

💡 Tip: Keep mealtimes distraction-free. Try soft music, gentle conversation, or even narrating what they’re eating (“This is carrot porridge — it’s sweet and orange!”). It helps babies stay present and mindful while eating.

While introducing new foods is great, offering too many at once can overwhelm your baby’s senses — or make it hard to identify which food caused a reaction if allergies appear.

💡 Tip: Introduce one new food every 3 days. This gives your baby’s tummy time to adjust and helps you observe their preferences or sensitivities easily.

It’s so tempting to coax “just one more spoon!” — especially when we worry about nutrition. But forcing can create negative associations with food. Babies thrive when they feel safe and respected during mealtimes.

💡 Tip: Offer the food, and if your Little Boss refuses, that’s okay. Try again later. Respect their cues — they might not be hungry now, but they will be later. Remember: mealtime is about building trust, not finishing the bowl.

Many parents stick with smooth purees for too long because they’re afraid their baby might choke. But staying on purees too long can make it harder for babies to accept textures later on.

💡 Tip: Once your baby shows readiness (usually around 8–9 months), start introducing soft mashed or finely chopped textures.

Parenting is a journey of learning, not perfection. Every meal is a chance to connect, to learn your baby’s cues, and to build healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
