Mess, Giggles & First Foods: A Parent’s Guide to Solids

Oct 5, 2025

One of the biggest milestones in your parenting journey is introducing your Little Boss to solids. It’s exciting (and a little nerve-wracking!) to see your little one explore new tastes and textures. If your baby is around six months old, you may be wondering: When do I start? What should I feed first? How much and how often? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.

When is My Baby Ready for Solids?

Every baby grows at their own pace, but most are ready to start solids at around six months. Instead of just watching the calendar, look out for these signs of readiness:

  • Baby can sit up with support and hold their head steady.

  • Shows interest in food—watching you eat, reaching out, or opening their mouth when you bring food near.

  • Has lost the tongue-thrust reflex, meaning food isn’t automatically pushed out.

If you’re unsure, always check with your pediatrician before starting.

How to Start Feeding Solids

The key is to start simple and go slow. Begin with smooth, single-ingredient foods. Offer one new food at a time and wait about 3 days before introducing another so you can watch for any allergic reactions.

Don’t stress if your baby only eats a little at first—this stage is about exploration, not nutrition. Breastmilk or formula will still remain their main source of nutrition until 12 months.

First Food Ideas

Your baby’s iron stores begin to drop around 6 months, so iron-rich foods are especially important. Here are some beginner-friendly options:

  • Vegetables: Carrot puree, pumpkin puree, sweet potato mash

  • Fruits: Apple puree, pear puree, banana mash

  • Grains: Baby rice cereal, oat porridge, soft-cooked quinoa

  • Proteins (from 6–7 months): Lentil puree, chicken puree, white fish (low mercury)

💡 Pro tip: Steam or boil foods until very soft, then blend into a smooth puree or mash with a fork.

When to Feed Solids

Timing makes a big difference! Start with once a day—usually late morning or early afternoon, so you have time to watch for any reactions.

  • 6 months → Once a day (1–2 teaspoons)

  • 6.5–7 months → Twice a day (2–4 tablespoons)

  • 8–9 months → Three times a day, building towards small meals

Always follow your baby’s cues. If they turn their head away or fuss, stop. Feeding should be relaxed and pressure-free.

How Much to Give

Think of solids as a gentle introduction. Start with just a teaspoon or two, then gradually increase the portion as your baby shows interest. Over time, you’ll notice they’ll eat more in one sitting and even demand more variety!

Tips for a Smooth Transition

  • Offer solids after a milk feed, not when baby is starving or overly full.

  • Use a baby-sized spoon and go slow—this is all new to them.

  • Expect mess! Let your baby explore, touch, and even play with food—it’s how they learn.

  • Avoid salt, sugar, and honey before age one.

  • Make mealtime fun by sitting together as a family—babies learn by watching you eat.
